Managed by the Columbia County Historical Society, the Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse and Luykas Van Alen House reside on the same property just 5 minutes from the inn. Bibliophiles are thrilled to visit the 1850's schoolhouse where Schoolmaster Jesse Merwin inspired Washington Irving to pen the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and develop the site's eponymous main character. Located on the same property, the Lukyas Van Alen home stands as one of less than a dozen examples of historically intact Dutch Colonial houses in the Hudson Valley.

Upstate NY is much loved for its quaint villages and rolling fields. The best villages in our state have preserved their rural charm in part by limiting the presence of national franchises. Kinderhook is no exception! Come explore shops within walking distance of the inn as well as our other favorites in neighboring villages. We can't possibly name them all but encourage you to check out these local charms!
Don't worry about packing a heavy book for your visit. Kinderhook Books, located next door to the inn, offers a fantastically curated selection of excellent reads. Order a glass of wine and relax in the book store's backyard garden.

The freshly made soups, salads and sandwiches are only topped by the shop's award-winning homemade ice cream made from fruit from the family farm, Samascott Orchards. Come in spring for seedlings, summer for ice cream, fall for an epic 7-acre corn maze and during the holiday season for decor and Christmas trees!
We have a soft spot for other buildings from the 1800's who now serve a modern clientele. Sand Lake Merchant is exactly that in a retail shop! Focusing on local, artisan and immensely charming goods, Sand Lake Merchant has every beautiful knick-knack and souvenir you need to mark your upstate adventure.
The city of Hudson's famed Warren Street is known for high-stakes design, antique shops and art galleries. The weekends-only antique and treasures shop, Schoolhouse Mercantile, is akin to a scavenger hunt designed for adults. With a constantly updating inventory, you never know what you'll find !
