Aptly described as "the heart of the Village," Old Dutch Inn sits regally at the apex of the Village Square. Guests of the inn's four front rooms overlook the Village Green with spectacular access to and views of the seasonal farmers' market, the acclaimed Candle Light Night and the numerous annual Village parades and events. The restoration of this historic property coincides with the return of a bustling Village Square where residents and visitors can gather, dine, shop and begin their exploration of Kinderhook's and the Upper Hudson Valley's unique charms.
The Village of Kinderhook is an unparalleled rural escape. Numerous agrarian, historical and cultural attractions are within a short walk from the inn including the acclaimed Pick-Your-Own farm, Samascott Orchards, the Empire State Trail, the Columbia County Historical Society and Jack Shainman's upstate gallery, "The School". Located within a 15 minute drive are Art Omi, the Villages of Chatham and Ghent and the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site. In just a 20 minute drive guests can reach the nearby City of Hudson while day trips to Olana State Historic Site, Tanglewood, Jiminy Peak, Catamount Mountain Resort, the Berkshires region and Albany are favorite excursions.
The inn is listed on the National Register as part of the Kinderhook Village Historic District. The Village of Kinderhook is one of New York State's oldest villages, appearing on Dutch maps in 1614. The inn property dates back at least as far as 1820 when it was built to serve as a shoe shop, private dwelling and public hall. In 1861, following the fall of South Carolina's Fort Sumter, a town wide gathering was held in the property's public hall. It was at this gathering that Kinderhook elders proposed, and a public vote endorsed the creation of a Kinderhook regiment in support of the Union's efforts against the "rebels and traitors" pursuing secession. Kinderhook's regiment first mustered in the 91st of Albany in late December, 1861 (Collier, E.A., (1914), A History of Old Kinderhook from Aboriginal Days to the Present Time, G.P. Putnam's Sons).
Aside from its service as a public hall, the property has most notably served as a lodging and hospitality venue operating at times as Lindenwald Hotel (1860-1914), Kinderhook Inn (1930/40), Petrillo's Inn (1950), Van Buren Inn (1981) and most famously, as Old Dutch Inn. Each guest room is named for an element of the building's or surrounding area's history.
Following an extended period of dormancy starting in the early 2000s, Old Dutch Inn was acquired by a local family and lovingly restored to cater to a contemporary clientele. Each of the inn's 9 guest rooms retains its delightful idiosyncrasy while having undergone a rejuvenation in order to offer modern, luxurious comforts and a chic aesthetic. Updated amenities include an elevator, marble finishes in the bathrooms, rainfall showerheads, cast iron soaking tubs, smart TV's and advanced air purification technology. Now back in service as a lodging destination, Old Dutch Inn operates as though every guest is a family friend.
Guests are welcome to complimentary coffee, tea and bottled water throughout their stay. While the property does not currently offer a restaurant, each room is provided with modest gift cards to Morningbird Cafe, located directly across the street from the inn. Inn staff are eager to assist guests in making reservations for any and all needs during visits to the area.
The property is a quietly elegant destination with the luxuries of a boutique inn. Although Kinderhook's many charms and heritage may draw you to our area, the comfort and ease of Old Dutch Inn invites you to extend your stay. Overnight guests will have access to a lounge, game room and gathering room where they are welcome to relax, unwind or even- gasp - check in with work using our complimentary wi-fi and business desk. As a family-friendly property we are happy to offer the option for connected rooms and a crib, availability depending, as well as a dedicated kids' corner curated by Play Pop Co. Contactless check-in allows guests to arrive any time and although we hope each room has everything our guests need, a 24/7 support line is always available for ad hoc needs. Strict quiet hours running 10pm - 7am benefit our overnight guests as well as Village neighbors. At this time, access to the property is limited to overnight guests and their callers. The general public is welcome to call or email in order to arrange a private showing or to reserve use of the public room for private events. The property is subject to CCTV monitoring at all times.
